What Was a Turnover Toaster?
A turnover toaster was an early type of electric toaster designed to toast bread one side at a time.
Unlike the automatic pop-up toasters we’re familiar with today, the user had to monitor the bread and manually turn or flip it so the other side could toast.
The glowing heating elements were visible, allowing the person making breakfast to watch the bread gradually change color as it cooked.
There was no setting that simply said “medium.”
There was no automatic timer doing the thinking.
The person standing nearby was part of the process.
