I have been making these Old School Soft Sugar Cookies for 45 years. Every time I share this recipe, I get questioned about the sour milk. The PA Dutch were very frugal and nothing ever went to waste, including sour milk. You can use buttermilk or make your own by adding 1 1/2 Tbsp of vinegar to the measuring cup prior to adding the milk. It is a very sentimental day when I make these heart cookies, not only because of this recipe, but because my dad made this heart cookie cutter in his high school shop class 66 years ago.
