old-fashioned bread pudding with vanilla sauce

Ingredients :

– 4 cups (about 8 slices) day-old bread, cubed
– 2 cups milk
– 1/4 cup butter, melted
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 2 eggs, beaten
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Préparations :

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Place the bread cubes in a greased 8-inch square baking dish.
3. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk until warm (do not boil). Remove from heat and stir in the melted butter.
4. In a large bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Gradually stir in the milk mixture.
5. Pour the mixture over the bread cubes, pressing the bread down gently to ensure it’s all covered and soaking up the mixture.
6. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the liquid.
7. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the top and gently mix them into the bread mixture.
8. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
9. Remove from oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
